The Soft Hour

There is a soft hour that arrives just before the streetlights remember themselves. The sky goes the color of an old photograph, and the dog next door barks once, as if to confirm the time. I used to think peace was something you arranged — clean counters, finished lists, a closed laptop. Now I think peace is something that arranges you.
